New Consultants' Development Programme

Milton Keynes University Hospital offers a “New Consultant Development Programme” This four day programme is aimed at Consultants who have been a Consultant less than two years or who had been at Milton Keynes University Hospitals less than two years. Delivered in conjunction with NHS Elect this bespoke programme of information, networking and leadership development is based around key areas that the cohort determines. The programme started in 2015, there have been two successful cohorts completed; the 3rd cohort of new Consultants will commence in January 2018. The programme is open to all new medical Consultants joining MKUH.

MKUH is a member of NHS Elect which is a national member’s network organisation. NHS Elect is part of the NHS and provides NHS organisations with tools and high quality support to supplement in house management teams and to support teams to develop new skills via on site workshops and development programmes.

A pre workshop questionnaire is sent prior to the programme asking delegates to rate their confidence and competence levels for different aspects of their Consultant role. The pre workshop questionnaire includes

  • Managing self and new career as a consultant,
  • Providing leadership to clinical teams,
  • Effective working within clinical areas
  • Contributing to the leadership of your CSU
  • Leading Trust wide initiatives and contributing to the wider organisational development
  • Operating as a regional and national leader

The overarching learning outcomes of the programme are 

  • Reflect on the Vision and “We Care” values of the Trust and their role as senior medical leaders in delivering them.
  • Gain some understanding of the health system in which the hospital operates, including regulation, commissioning and financial flows
  • Consider the challenges of leading teams in our organisation and get some practical tips and tools for successful leadership
  • Spend time considering their future learning and development needs and planning a ‘light-touch’ programme to meet these
  • Networking and building relationships with Consultant colleagues and the MKUH Executive Team

The programme is evaluated after each day and feedback is acted upon
